Many of you have heard that i was going to build a real live havoc! this is true, or at least as true as close as my dad and i can get to building the havoc. i want to share the information i recieve from my father concerning the work he is doing on it, and from information gathered by myself. if you are from the PSU (PlayStaion Underground) and are not a member here, please include your PSU name (if applicable) in your (every) post in these threads for easier reference. i do have a poor memory and it is inconvenient for me to forget your name while wriing a message to several people.
Back to the matter at hand, i will (hopefully) edit this post w/ any (relevant) posts i make in the future of this thread. i hope to make one post minimum every weekend to go over the current progress made over the past week.
a line of me:
will signify the beginning/end of the different posts that will accumulate in the editing i make.
now to the part you actually WANTED to read!
on Sunday September 3, 2006 my dad bought a '68 Baja Bug (VW) for $800 (thats pretty cheap for those of you who dont know). the engine is all i wish to use for the havoc. everything else is scrap to me, but dad seems to have future plans for the poor thing that ive nicknamed, "Herby"
Herby's Engine:

for some you who find the 'engine' and 'under the hood' pictures confusing, it may help to know that VW bug engines are in the back of the car, and they are air cooled. lol
why did i choose a bug you ask? well i am most familiar w/ the VW bug engine, because i often help my dad w/ our current Dune Buggy (a.k.a. Sand Rail) which is also a VW (and i like the way they sound so pretty and distinct *hug*). ill include a picture of it later because its cool and it will give some of you and idea of what the havoc will look like w/o the sheet metal/body parts ;D
Sunday was spent mostly just looking at the car and figuring out wat it needed to make it run (yes we had to tow it home). dad found out wat the engines stats were that day too.
"H5 August '67 through July '69. 53 hp, 1500 cc..."
that means that this engine was in bug's from Aug '67 to July '69, the stock engine has 53 horsepower, and 1500 cubic centimeters (its metric because VW's are german silly ) of piston displacement...the last part is hard to explain...but to compare Herby's engine to the one we have in our dune buggy right now (it was very similar before dad got his hands on it so im going to be comparing these two often), the horsepower the dune buggy has now is about 200 lol.
On Mon. 9/4/06 (it was a holiday so no school ^_^) dad and i woke up early to work on Herby a bit, see if we could get it running, or whatever else we could do to improve it. first thing we tried was starting it. dad plugged a battery charger up to herby the night before so that the battery (which was dead, dad says its the alternator, which i have been informed is bad [the alternator's bad not bad for the car i mean....like bad eggs...its useless...anyway...]) would work in the morning! and yes it did. at least...it tried to start and what a very noisy starter it has too! lol
after removing the filter on the carberator, and spraying some carberator fluid in it, we tried to start it again...no luck...more carberator fluid- tried again...nadda...we tried this several times, until at last, things started to change. you could hear the engine was reacting....anyway after a million more dittos and repeats we got it going steadily...that is...until dad lets off the gas...so thats the next puzzle- why wont it idle?-dad takes out the screwdriver, adjusts some things, and voila! the idle! ahh...listen to it purr....hahahaaa....well, from there we work on the brakes. which dont seem to do anything (no we didnt try to drive it yet! lol dad jacked up herby and rolled a wheel whilst i applied pressure to teh brakes...) so we head to the hood, and find there is no brake fluid so...after filling it up we try again...w/ a little success...after this i had to go to work and while i was away dad fixed the brakes sorry theres no info there; well appearantly while he was drivin around in herby he didnt go very far because the clutch is rattling pretty bad.
and thats all the time weve had so far...so to sum up everything weve done (including some parts i didnt have room/time for-o yea...dad mustve taken the engine out 3xs already lol):
*Charge the battery
*remove some annoying paneling around the engine
*fix the brakes(unless they leak...then well find out where...then fix it)
*saw off a rusted bolt on the front left tire....(that was fun XD)
*remove the outer shells of the exaust (now the exaust has pretty lil fins )
*umm....you know i really dont remember...but we did a lil bit more...
Sept 9 to 10 & Sept 15 to 17
phew, wats it been? 2 weeks? well, i meant to tell you guys on the weekend of 9-9 to 9-10 we went to Dumont which is where my havoc's going to be tearin' it up~ (hopefully, a thread [pictures!~] on that soon)
but last weekend, dad did some fixing up w/o me fortunately, i noticed the bug had moved from in the garage to the side of the house heh...well on 9-15 (a Fri) dad said he realized that it wasn't the clutch thats messed up, as was noted in the first weekend...turns out it was the shifter linkage (we couldnt get it into 1st or 2nd gear, were were actually in 3rd -_-). also looks like the front drive suspension needs some tightening. good news is that the brakes aren't leaking, which befuddles us as to why there was no brake fluid in it when we got it...hmm, more good news is that the battery is holding a charge, though Herby still needs a new alternator...thats all, till this crazy weekend's over @.@
Sept 30 to Oct 1
Another week or 2 and im typing again @_@ soo...tired...yet i must type! Ok! Wat weve done so far has been updated below!~
Since Herbys been moved to the side of the house we havent been able to do much except find out how to get his key out XD, umm....hmmm, well we pulled him out for a drive for a sec and as dads going down the street im watching the engine bounce around a bit lol! So that means the transmission mount is loose...so much to do! And...all the time in the world – unavailable! i found it hard enough to find the time to compile this...but its all coming! Memory, dont fail me now!
2/8/07
Dad want to put a turbo in the bug! YAY! i didnt even think of that one...he must be learning! BWAHHAHAHA!1111one1
k, its 30 mins till midnight, im going to bed then waking up early and refresh to get some of this stuff done ^o^ have fun everyone!
wanna thank God, cause i was all like, Lord if its ur will let this project like work and stuff, and everythings been really enjoyable lately, i mean we got herby cheap and everything...and everythings just doin well, so yea, wanna thank God. ^_^
