I figured I'd give Dirge a try. I thought, "Who knows? Maybe it'll atleast have a good story line, or pretty nice graphics." But what do I get?
A camera that moves too slow, a character who can't target enemies except when directly facing them, an on-screen target that roughly covers up enemies surrounding the one I'm shooting at, and so much nonsense I can barely hold my insides in before I puke them out.
The story is boring. Maybe it's because they tried to make everything seem 'dark', or because the main character is so unbelievably goth that he can't say two words without me thinking he's sick.
Most shooters provide a system where once you kill the target you're locked on to, it'll automatically switch to the nearest one, (Not anything too far, something that's maybe 1-7 feet away.) This one didn't. If Vincent is all about the shooting, I'd imagine he'd be able to recognize a target that close, rather than stand there until shot to realize.
Sure, the on-screen target looks cool, but I can't see anything behind it. Ever heard of 35% opacity Square?
The map. Oh geez the map. I would guess that while looking at it and moving, I'm supposed to see where I'm going. This would be another excellent spot where 35% opacity could come in.
The character looks like on thin layer of 3d rendering, with badly placed textures. I think a good idea would have to actually re-do his design, but no. Let's keep him looking stupid like he did in the very first game.
Enemies are stupid. I'm not even 45 feet away from two, who appear to be talking, and I'm in plain sight, (Wearing a deep red cape with a gold-shimmering gauntlet, and gold-shimmering boots. A red bandana and a gun that should cling-cling like 500 pennies in a pocket.), I kill one in 3 hits, and the other stays there. Just standing as if nothing had happened to the other, carrying on with the conversation clueless that his comrad had been shot. So I shot him too. Didn't even see it coming.
My comrads, those WRO guys, are also dumb. They were helping to take out the 'cerulians', and decided to take cover behind a gas tank. Need I say more?
I was unaware in the first game how long it actually took materia to be fired upon someone. Afterall, in Advent Children, Kadaj seemed to shoot a blizzard at cloud that went around 90 mph! This fire materia I'm shooting travels at maybe 3 mph. Oh goodie.
The only good thing I actually enjoy is making my guns. Customizing them and making them look cool. But that's about the only thing they do. Look cool. It's not fun to shoot them. Isn't that the point?
I knew for a fact this game would be crap, and what do I find? Exactly what I expected. Nothing. Another sad attempt at money making that basically only made money because of it's title. Fanboy/girl nerds would buy this thinking, "Sure it's a shooter, but Square made it! It has to be good!", never playing a shooter before, this is the impression they get. I also distinctly remember the clerk at Hollywood Video telling me it was awesome. My guess is that he's yet another fanboy so drawn into the title that he's blind. That poor soul.
