Ok, so this is the first game I really bought for my new 360 (it came with Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter and I bought Halo 2 later), and it's pretty freakin awesome.
Crackdown is set in the not-so far off future. As you may have expected, it sucks. It takes place in Pacific City, a costal metropolis, where three gangs, Los Muertos, The Volk, and the Shai-Gen Coporation have basically taken control of the city and reduced it to anarchy. The only truly safe place is the Agency keep. The Agency is a law enforcement organization that's taking extreme measures to clean up the city. And that's where you come in. As a super-powered cyborg soldier with amazing capabilities and a Halo-like regenerating shield, it's your job to make the future suck just a little less by killing every gang member within a 10 mile radius of Pacific City.
Yeah, who cares. You get to blow stuff up. Lots of stuff. Also, I didn't really notice this until I played, but Crackdown has a very cool visual look. Everything looks truly 3-D. The style almost makes me think I'm in a Marvel comic.
As you progress through the game, you have 5 core skills: Agility, Driving, Explosives, Strength and Firearms, which evolve over time. Translation - if you shoot a guy with a gun, your Firearms skills increase. If you blow someone up with a grenade, your Explosives skills go up, and so on. Blow enough criminals to bite size pieces, and you'll level up that ability. You can level up each skill 4 times, then max it out. So how well does it work? VERY WELL. Having a higher agility rating is especially nice because you can run faster and jump farther, thus getting you to more of the city in less time.
But whenever I talk about Crackdown to most people, they just say it's a GTA rip off. I have 2 words for you people: SHUT UP. CRACKDOWN IS NOT A GTA CLONE/KILLER. First off, the story really isn't as big as you'd think it would be. Apart from killing the 21 gang bosses, the game basically gives you a bunch of guns and missiles, drops you into this amazing looking city and says GO CRAZY. Which is something I can do very well. And also, the whole super human thing is a really cool feature. It just enables you to do so many things you couldn't do in other open ended sandbox games. Oh, another fun feature - you can target specific parts of cars with your lock on - specifically the gas tank.
So yeah, I really love this game and I feel justified spending $400 on this white box.
