By the way things look, this theory will probably be proven dead wrong. But here it is anyway.
judging by some of these Hanso exposed pieces, I've been thinking that the Island was at some point a cold war militarty base. A hidden site where troops and perhaps even ICBMs could be stored. This would explain why one of the others killed by the tailies had that US Army knife on him. All of the orientation films we have seen are old enough to be from the cold war, all from 1981 or earlier. How exactly Dharma ties into this, I'm not entirely sure. Perhaps the Island was a failsafe, where a utopian society could be created in the event of a full scale global nuclear war. All the projects being carries out by Dharma were for the betterment of the people who would be living in these new utopian groups. Apparently the people behind Dharma were very sure that the cold war would end up with both sides, or perhaps even the world obliterated, so they went ahead with their Island project. But then the war ended without any nuclear attacks.
Mittelwerk and friends must be headed to the Island, if that is where they're going, to get something Dharma left behind. Maybe an experiment, maybe a person, it could be an ICBM for all I know. But, whatever it is, I believe that it is connected to the sickness, due to the quarantined wards on the Helgus Antonius.
So that's my theory, and I'm sticking to it.
This is a bit old now, but it could still come true right?
