Ok, so I was gone for a few days back there. But did you think I was sitting around on the beach doing nothing (for the whole time)? If so, you are WRONG! I was theorizing! I never stop thinking, always working on something...and this is what it brought me. This little theory of mine.
Now this is like a dry run of this theory. I intend to make a newer version of it after I get some feedback. Some things I’ve actually left blank because I haven’t fully thought them out yet.
In this theory, I try to answer a little bit of everything that’s Island related, although it seems to be more Dharma-centric for now. So here goes.
The Island is alive. The producers themselves have called it a character. It has a conscience, it’s possibly even self aware. It can reach out to you and give you visions, trying to make contact. It isn’t part of this world. Well, not fully anyway. It’s a gap, a flaw, a gateway between two different planes. An almost improbable anomaly. The electromagnetism is so strong on the Island that it created a type of rift leading to another plane. Sometimes, the rift becomes slightly unstable and things from the other side come through onto the Island’s plane. Strange things, like a four toed foot statue. Even environmental things, such as the sickness.
Time does not move the same way on the Island as it does on the rest of the plane. It’s encased in a different zone of time, a temporal anomaly. I don’t know how it moves yet, which direction it travels or how fast, or if it’s even moving at all.
The rift was always there but wasn’t fully activated. It was hard to control it so it could be used. That is, until the Dharma Initiative showed up. They set up facilities on the Island to try to control the rift and to make supplies and conduct research that would aid them in their efforts. These are the installations and their purposes.
Station 3 was where control of the rift was maintained. Dharma found out that the rift could be stabilized by regulating the electromagnetism it was leaking by discharging the buildup every 108 minutes. Everything went well, until there was an incident in the lab, where a large control center was located. Someone did not discharge the magnetism on time and there was a huge rip created briefly between the two places. The magnetism was brought under control, but it was too late. Five people were killed in the accident, hence the blast door reference near the Swan, “Casualties: 5”. After this, Dharma decided to cease the experimentation in the Swan station. The station’s purpose was now changed to a much simpler task: pushing a button to regulate the rift. The lab was sealed off behind a concrete wall and a failsafe system was built, in case such an situation was to come up again in the future. If the incident had went on for much longer, irreparable damage would have been done to the Island. The temporal zone it was in would have shattered and the rift would collapse, causing the gap to rip fully open, the Island to be destroyed and merge the two planes together. This would cause the destruction of both planes. The failsafe would prevent this reaction by stopping it before it starts, relinquishing all the control Dharma had on it, undoing all of their work to control it.
But when Desmond hit the failsafe, it was already too late. Considerable damage had been done, and the Island will slowly but surely spin itself down into self-destruction. It explains this season 3 spoiler from the Jay and Jack podcast, given to them from Ryan and Jen ~
The Staff appears to anyone as a medical station and an infirmary. It is those things, but there was something else being developed there. A vaccine, something that would make people immune to the sickness coming through the rift. The sickness is an enigma. It is a part of the Island. It exists everywhere on the Island, the only place that we’ve seen that appears to be immune to the sickness is the Swan station because of it’s airlock entrance. And even then the inhabitants of the station were injecting a vaccine into their system, although that was probably just to be on the safe side, or if someone had to leave the station for some reason.
The sickness doesn’t do anything to you immediatley. It will take some time, weeks, perhaps even months. Then the first signs appear. They aren’t physical, they’re apparent becuase the infected person will slowly start to go crazy. Loosing their capacity for making rational decisions, things like that. Then they completly loose their mind, sometimes even trying to kill.
While workers at the Staff came up with ideas and versions of a vaccine, they discovered that some people were genetically immune to the sickness. People like Danielle, who are able to live on the Island without using any vaccine. Rosseau was forced to kill her research team when they got infected. Also, anyone who has been vaccinated before birth will be completly immune to the sickness. Someone like baby Aaron.
Work on a vaccine progressed. The Dharma scientists suffered many failures while experimenting on human test subjects. Some of the versions of vaccine even accelerated the sickness to further Dharma’s research, killing their test subjects. Hence the blast door map refrence, “The disease grows worse with the treatment, the remedy is worse than the disease”.
Eventually, Dharma came up with a vaccine. But it wasn’t a one time only injection. You had to inject yourself with it every nine days, or you were vulnerable to the sickness. Also, using the vcaccine
This is where the Others originally came from. They were a group that survived the vaccine experiments and rebelled against the Dharma scientists. This was the “AH/MGD incindent of 1985”, as mentioned on the blast door map. The Others escaped and lived on the other side of the Island. Wanting to put an end to this, Dharma called in a top secret US military unit to deal with the Others. However, they failed when the Others told them why Dharma wanted them dead, they told them what they had done to them. Having heard this, the soldiers sided with the Others and disappeared with them into the jungle.
The Pearl is a monitoring station, originally built to observe Dharma teams in their stations and facilities as they performed their jobs. The people in the Pearl watched them, writing observations in notebooks, thinking that the people they were viewing were subjects in a psychological experiment. Little did they know that they, the viewers, WERE the experiment.
There are nine monitors in the Pearl, although when Locke and Eko found it, only one of them worked, and it was connected to a camera in the Swan station (note that they didn’t turn on every monitor). Those monitors were connected to installations all over the Island, some possibly to the abandoned Swan lab.
The Pearl was originally designed to kill 3 birds with one big stone ~
1)To keep an eye on the Dharma stations, although that was abandoned later
2)So they could complete one of their psych experiments
3)Specifically, to observe if the things coming out of the rift. Like the sickness, to see if the Island was effecting any personell, etc.
But after the incident in the Swan station, after the incident with the Others and when the vaccine experiments had begun, Dharma decided to watch the people in that station for insight on what the sickness can do to someone. They abandoned the sickenss acceleration experiements in the Staff, fearing another incident and, possibly, another set of Others, instead using the Pearl inhabitants as their subjects, watching them from a distance. Again, the results were not pretty.
I’ll have more on the Pearl station in my next revision of this theory.
Well, I really have nothing on the Arrow station yet. Mainly becuase I don’t think that the Arrow the tailies found is the main Arrow facility. More like a warehouse or a storage closet. Becuase when you look around in there, there’s really nothing that could serve any scientific purpose. The most advanced thing in there are the lights! But, there are two things I have noticed about the Arrow from the blast door map ~
1) There is an equation for a dipole magnetic field directly to the right of the Arrow. I heard somewhere that it might possibly be connected to a particle accelerator somehow, I’ll look into it.
2) To the upper left of the Arrow it says, “Possible manufacturing facility with light indistrial equipment”. Could this mean the Arrow is like a factory? Could this be where the Others got the fake doors for the Door ‘station’ from? Note: This might refer to the C3 location on the map.
I’ll have more on the Arrow station in my next revision of this theory.
Ok, this is where I go into pure specualtion (not that what’s above isn’t).
The Flame station is the Island’s power center. This is where all of the power from the Island comes from. There is a mention on the blast door map of “a large number of underwater springs” near the Flame. The power source is a geothermal generator with cables going all over the Island supplying power to the Dharma stations.
But that isn’t the Flame’s only purpose. It is mentioned on the map as a “possible Cerberus control station”. Cerberus is the smoke monster that’s throwing trees into the air, dragging people into holes, all that good stuff. Cerberus is controlled by mere thought, hence the blast door map refrence, “I think, therefore I am depressed”. So this means that the Flame has to have a current inhabitant or that the monster has a set of commands programmed into it.
Also, the Flame’s name is a hint to why both of these theories might be true. ‘Flame’ could refer to the power being generated, and for Cerberus, the Flame would control the Smoke.
Possibly I’ll add onto the Flame in my next revision of this theory.
Speaking of Cerberus, this bring us to the last part of the theory (for now).
The monster is a projection of the Island’s conscience itself. Dharma discovered that they could actually harness a porting of the Island by use of reaching through the rift and control it however they wanted, even program it.
Controlled from the Flame station, it’s purpose is to aid in the eradication of the sickness, thus making the environment more habitable. Dharma found out that the magnetic energy that exists in the monster’s cloud somehow nullified the sickness over time. So Dharma decided to have it clean out the Island in a grid pattern. Currently it is working on decontaminating the area near the Swan and the C-4 (possibly the Pearl) locations.
Dharma discovered that somkey made a killer security system. It could be deployed all across the Island and quickly respond to any situation.
Smokey also functions as a means of transport. It can envelop you in it’s cloud and transport you across the Island. This is how the passengers of Flight 815 survived - Cerberus was able to get them out of the plane before it crashed, which would have killed them all. But then, why would it do a thing like that? They have been brought to this Island by someone, for a purpose. Whoever is in the Flame station, whoever programmed Cerberus, wants them there...
...but that’s for the revised theory.
So yeah, that’s my theory and I’m sticking to it. It still has a good deal of holes in it, but I think I can patch them after thinking it through more throughly. What do you think?

Interplanar Island

They knew somebody who was playing an extra Other in a scene that was being filmed. The scene involved “him and a group of Others acting as if there was an earthquake. Looking around, acting scared, concerned muttering, acting like they did when the hatch blew.”
